Designing your Kitchen
Designing your kitchen is fun and here are some tips to help you understand the basics of kitchen design. It is important that your kitchen not only looks great but is a functional space allowing you to store, prepare and cook food with ease. Many kitchens are also used for dining and entertaining.
A Functional Kitchen
Consider what is the best layout for your kitchen in the space that you have. The most important element in designing a functional kitchen is the placement of the oven, the refrigerator, and the sink. If possible, these appliances should form the kitchen work triangle and when placed effectively provide maximum efficiency and ease of use, giving you free movement between the appliances and minimising the need to stoop and reach.
The kitchen layout should, if possible, also provide enough space so that two people can be in the kitchen at the same time without constantly getting in each other’s way.
What Will You Store In Your Kitchen?
To help you make decisions about when to use cabinets and drawers or open shelving, identify what you want to store in your kitchen.
Making a list will help to clarify your thoughts, for example:
- Fresh and dry food
- Saucepans and kitchen appliances – some can be on the benchtop or other shelving, some you will want to hide away in suitable storage
- Cooking utensils such as mixing bowls, measuring jugs, spatula, and more
- Cutlery
- Crockery
- Glasses
- And more eg corks, matches, favourite recipes, tea towels, cleaning tools

The Visual Impact of Your Kitchen
You have now identified the space available for your kitchen and what you want to store or display.
Apart from the large appliances in your kitchen – that is the oven, stove top, range hood, refrigerator, dishwasher and the sink – the main elements in your kitchen which can enhance the visual impact of your kitchen are the splashback, the cabinet doors and the kitchen benchtop.
The next step is to figure out what your kitchen will look like – for instance:
- Do you want to have some big drawer storage as well as cabinet storage? Do you want appliances stored on the bench or in a cabinet? Do you want a pantry cabinet, a walk-in pantry, or is there space for a butler’s pantry?
- What style of cabinetry to you like? Which benchtop would you enjoy working on? What colour scheme appeals to you? Do a search on the internet and check out the Cabinetry Choices page for ideas.
- Before you choose the style and colour of your cabinetry it is a good idea to choose your kitchen benchtop – that way you can match your cabinetry to the benchtop. If you choose the cabinetry colour first, your choice of benchtop may be more limited.

Kitchen Benchtops
There are so many choices available when looking at kitchen benchtops. Probably the biggest factor will be the price, but check out all the possibilities.
Benchtops can be made of natural stone, treated stone, ceramic, silica free stone, porcelain, timber, and laminate. There are many different patterns, colours and textures to choose from as well.

Cabinetry Fittings
Don’t forget to consider the type of door and drawer handles and knobs that you would like. Or maybe you would prefer the flush look of a handleless kitchen where the cabinet doors are opened with a push, or finger pull doors are used.
Other cabinetry fittings you might consider include hinge systems, lift systems for wall cabinets, drawer and cabinet inserts such as a carousel for those tricky corners.
